Your book won’t arrive by you simply thinking about it or threatening to write it. Your dream is calling
By Aubrey Mavhuli
“On writing—a matter of exercise. If you work out with weights for fifteen minutes a day over the course of ten years, you’re gonna get muscles. If you write for an hour and a half a day for ten years, you’re gonna turn into a good writer.” —Stephen King, Time (October 6, 1986)
Success is like an iceberg
Success is like an iceberg most people see the protruding part and conclude that’s all there is to it.
Fruit trees as well can be deceptive. Some people see the fruits and do not see the roots and conclude that is all there is to a fruit tree. Below the surface there is roots working hard and stretching far for nutrients and water.
The journey of a thousand miles starts with commitment
Book writing success is often the same way. Lonely authors plod along with the proverbial typewriter a letter at a time until a word and sentence are grown and fully constructed.
The journey of a thousand miles often doesn’t start with the first step it starts with a commitment to see the journey through then the step is proof of the commitment.
Commitment is invisible, can’t be seen by the naked eye, but action proves it all.
Will you be an author or you will not be one! Successful people are quick to decide and then they take long to change any decision, on the other hand unsuccessful people take forever to decide and when the decision finally arrives, they won’t think twice to change it.
What a worst somebody comments!
Writers write procrastinators procrastinate
If you want to be a writer there is no point pontificating over the issue. There is no point gazing at the blank page either. Writers write procrastinators procrastinate.
There is always good news and bad news to any issue. The bad news is your book won’t write itself. There are no escalators to the top, someone once observed it’s the stairs that take you to the top of any field.
There is no microwave success.
The problem with our generation is we are looking for microwave success and this is why we are duped easily by the clergy and politicians alike.
Success we haven’t mastered is like a fruit that hangs on a tree with branches, a trunk and hardworking leaves and roots.
Writing is s learnable skill.
As for the good news, writing a book is just a skill, like all skills it is learnable. If you can learn to read, you can learn to write.
My good friend Veli Ndaba wrote a book and aptly titled it “Your dream is calling you,” I want to borrow his thinking and say to you your book is calling you. The question is will you answer?
One step at a time
If you took one step everyday towards your book, will you not one day arrive? Listen to the wisdom of veteran author and multimillionaire Stephen King at the time of going to press he was recorded to be worth half a billion dollars. “On writing—a matter of exercise.
If you work out with weights for fifteen minutes a day over the course of ten years, you’re going to get muscles.
If you write for an hour and a half a day for ten years, you’re going to turn into a good writer. — Stephen King, Time (October 6, 1986). There is no life wisdom that argues with this.
Think and write out your book
Your book won’t arrive by you simply thinking about it or threatening to write it. Write and it’s better if you exercised your writing muscle by writing every day. Writing is one of those skills you can never become terrible at through practice. Practise surely makes better.
