Thank You Sakunda. This is football. Football is football. Football is business

By Terrence Mwedzi

The appointment of Norman Mapeza as the interim head coach of the Warriors on a three-month contract is a refreshing, but tricky football affair.

Mapeza is being assisted by Mandla Mpofu (Highlanders coach) Taurai Mangwiro (Triangle coach), and former national team goalkeeper, Energy Murambadoro as the goalkeepers trainer.

But Mapeza’s assistant coaches are not good choices for me – it’s just an opinion – but let’s wait and see. Maybe they will change football narratives – we wish them well.

On the other hand, it is sad to note that Benjani ‘The Undertaker’ Mwaruwari was dropped as an assistant coach after a short space of time. l strongly believe Benji is the real deal, and I have said so in The Sunday Express before.

We should not underrate him anymore. That man has the nation at heart. Hopefully, he will join the Warriors coaching department anytime soon.

I think that he is going to be better than Logarusic

I also feel that all local coaches should be given a chance to show their kind of dance with the boys (Warriors). Yes – the local coaches understand our football better than foreign coaches: that’s not even a debatable fact.

I also think Mapeza is the right man for the job, and if I may add – I think that he is going to be better than Logarusic.

His coaching record is not questionable.

Obviously, it is not going to be easy to revive this World Cup campaign but he must try to put a smile on our faces.

In contrast, it’s time for Mapeza to clean Loga’s horrific mess and resuscitate the Warriors’ hopes of qualifying to the next round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

The time to invest in local coaches is now. It is worrisome that Logarusic managed to get 1 win in 14 matches before he was booted out last Sunday.

He was not a good coach at all and many soccer pundits/soccer football loving-fans will agree with me.

Since the start of the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers we have dropped five places down the FIFA World ranking – as l pen this piece, the Warriors are now ranked 113th on the FIFA ratings released on Thursday.

I think many people now admit that Logarusic was a disaster – one of the worst coaches in Zimbabwean football history.

Better he is gone but we still have other dozens of problems in the football fraternity to deal with before it’s too late.

I want to urge ZIFA not to hire foreign coaches again. We don’t want tricks and barbaric excuses this time.

We can do better as a nation.

Sakunda Worthwhile Sponsorship deal

And in other news – the sponsorship deal that was unveiled by Sakunda Holdings this week is commendable.

The deal came at a time where the two country’s biggest football clubs – Dynamos and Highlanders – were struggling to pay players their salaries.

That US$ 5.3 million three-year sponsorship deal means a lot to us as real football-loving fans. I see there are some people who want to put politics in our football which is bad. Do we have to politicize everything? No sane person can do that.

This is football. Football is football. Football is business. I urge the Sakunda Holdings to continue the good work. I feel happy.

I think, more money needs to be poured into football. Rich corporates and rich individuals should join the bandwagon. We need to take our football to greater heights. Thank you Sakunda.
