Let us zoom into a common disorder affecting our health. Depression is a common disorder affecting children, adolescents and adults. It is one of the common mental disorders. It is classified as a mood disorder. It is common but it often goes unnoticed. Depression is a major cause of disability worldwide. If depression is left untreated it can lead to suicide. Depression affects more women however the suicide rate is higher in men. Signs and symptoms of depression include changes in sleep patterns, either insomnia, excessive sleeping or early awakening, changes in appetite and, feeling tired all the time. Behaviour changes include withdrawal from socialising and a lack of interest in the things that were previously enjoyed, or excessive use of drugs and alcohol. Mood changes include excessive crying, feeling sad majority of the time, feeling hopeless and worthless. Inability to concentrate may occur. Thoughts of suicide are a sign of depression.
